The History Archive
The restoration of YF 2186 is supported by a thorough historical archive compiled by its current owner. Over the course of the project, he devoted hundreds of hours to researching and documenting every aspect of the car's remarkable story, creating a comprehensive three-volume history that is matches the attention to detail of the restoration itself.
The archive includes Claire Hay's historical research, Bentley factory records, Bentley Drivers Club documentation, period photographs spanning almost a century of the car's life, previous sales advertisements, restoration notes from former owners and restorers, together with every invoice recording Anthony's restoration into its current form. Every one of the 3,399 workshop hours and every component purchased has been documented, representing a total restoration expenditure of over £425,000 over a three-year period.
The volumes are presented in bespoke embossed binders to match the Rexine used on the roof of the car, creating a fitting extension of the vehicle itself. Complementing the archive is a beautifully produced A3 leather-bound build book, compiled by Fiona Richardson, which records the restoration in words and photographs, providing a lasting record of one of the most comprehensively documented Vintage Bentley restorations undertaken.

Documenting the journey
Throughout the project, Fiona Richardson was exceptional. She documented every stage of the restoration with care and precision, producing outstanding photography and maintaining a clear narrative of what we were trying to achieve. Just as importantly, she provided perspective and steady support, particularly towards the end of the project when matters felt increasingly demanding and I was recovering from a stroke.
This was always intended to be a once-in-a-lifetime undertaking. The challenge was not simply financial. It required sustained effort, focus and resilience. The learning curve was steep, and I often found myself working hard to keep pace with the specialists guiding the project, while also remaining clear about my own vision for this bespoke car.
I was also realistic enough to understand that I would not own the Bentley indefinitely. For that reason, it felt essential to commission Fiona to create a permanent record of the process. The book ensures that, whatever the future holds, there is a detailed and lasting account of what we achieved together.
